Black Aces to test Fernandez

Veteran goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez could prolong his playing career after he was invited to undergo pre-season training with Mpumalanga Black Aces.

The 36-year-old recently parted ways with SuperSport United following the end of his contract with the club, while AmaZayoni are looking to cover the vacancy which has been left by Jackson Mabokgwane, who is set to return to Bidvest Wits.

“Rowen will join us for pre-season training and we will take it from there,” Aces coach, Clive Barker, told Goal. “Jackson (Mabokgwane) has gone back to his club (Bidvest Wits) and we need another goalkeeper.

“But we will see if Rowen still has what it takes. Maybe we will end up giving him a contract, but I can’t make any promises yet.

“We have signed top players already, and the aim is to have our own players next season. The sooner we get the goalkeeping department sorted the better.”

Should he secure a contract at Aces, Fernandez will compete with Calvin Marlin, Bafana Nhlapo and Energy Murambadoro.
