South Africa’s Rowe wins in Zambia

South African golfer Lyle Rowe finished with a 14-under-par 279 to clinch the inaugural Zambia Sugar Open Golf Championship on Sunday.

The Port Elizabeth-born player scored 76, 69, 66, and 68 in four rounds at the Lusaka Golf Club to claim his first professional title.

Having started the last day a shot behind compatriot Niel Schietekat and Ulrish van den Berg, Rowe surged ahead following a solid start where he sunk three birdies in the front nine.

Three consecutive pars on 15, 16 and 17 left him five shots ahead and even the final-hole bogey was not enough to deny him his first win.

“It feels great to have the job done, there was nothing easy,” Rowe said after the win. “It was chilly and the wind made it even trickier but I am happy I putted well.

“I got a nice tip from my mate Jake Redman. He helped me a little bit and I just tried to keep that swing thought throughout the week.

“And I putted outstandingly the last two days. That’s basically what it comes down to – purely putting.

“It’s nice to get a win under the belt. Obviously you wonder when it’s going to come, so to get it done and to get it done on a nice course like this one is awesome.

“I hope winning this tough tournament will bring me greater success in the future.”
