Sonjica and Helebe fight for IBO title

Two South African boxers, Thabo Sonjica and Toto Helebe, are due to fight for an IBO title in a tournament to be broadcast live on SuperSport on Sunday afternoon.

For Sonjica, he will make the first defence of his super-bantamweight belt when he squares up to Helebe at the Orient Theatre in East London.

The live coverage of the tournament starts at 2pm and will be shown on SuperSport 4 and HD 4.

So who are the two fighters?

Sonjica is 25 and comes from Duncan Village near East London. Helebe is 29 and from Cape Town. He has had only 16 fights in nine years as a professional boxer.

Helebe’s claim to fame is that he turned his career around in June 2012 when he stopped the experienced former Olympian Phumzile Matyhila in the fifth round to win the SA bantamweight title.

After retaining the belt in fights against Klaas Mboyane and Cebo Ngema, he now has a record of 13-3, including 7 wins inside the distance.

Sonjica goes into the fight with a record of 18-2, with 13 shortcut wins. He won the vacant title when he stopped Silvester Lopez from the Philippines in the sixth round in East London on July 6 last year.

The tournament is presented by Mzi Mnguni of Eyethu Promotions.
