Questions answered about lack of service from Traffic Department

With regards to the concerns raised in the article ‘Accident Leaves Questions About Authorities’ in WITBANK NEWS June 6, page 4.

On May 30 the said traffic official attended an accident at the corner of OR Tambo and Gordon streets. On arrival at the scene of an accident there  were two vehicles involved, a grey Nissan LDV registration number FMM 412 MP and a white Ford sedan registration CHJ 942 MP.

The driver of the Nissan was already taken to hospital, while the other was still on the scene but not injured.

Witnesses reported that the driver of the Ford sedan was travelling on OR Tambo from north to south, he was signalling to turn right in Gordon Road and the Nissan LDV collided with it from behind.

The accident was reported to our control room with all necessary information and requested that the report should be forwarded to the police so that they can go to the hospital, because the injured driver was already taken to hospital. The traffic official requested that the driver of the breakdown services remove the motor vehicles on the road.

He further advised the driver of the Ford sedan to go and report the accident at the police station and left the scene as the road was cleared.

Now the question is: what is it that we did not provide because all that was expected from a traffic officer was done in accordance? We really find it strange that there was ‘lack of service rendered to the scene’. What more should have been done, advise us if we had operated outside our duties and give us new developed instructions to our operation or rule of operation.

“I have done what was supposed to be done by a traffic officer, it is not my responsibility to go an open a case on behalf of any other person involved on an accident. If information is required on the matter the information is readily available at the municipal control room with reference: (Traffic section VB/OB 427),” ” said the officer who attended the scene.
