Hijackers don’t only take cars but victims too

The perpetrators allegedly ordered the victim to sleep with his head facing down as they drove off with him.

Two incidents of carjacking occurred on the same day when two men became victims of

hijackings with firearms and hostages in their vehicles.

The first incident is believed to have occurred at approximately 19:00 on March 8 when a man was driving his Volkswagen Polo to Phola.

However, as he was driving next to a golf course, a white Renault Sandero allegedly overtook him and came to a standstill in front of his vehicle.

It is believed that as the victim was focused on the Sandero, two men approached his vehicle pointing at him with firearms and that three men exited the Sandero, approached the victim and forced him into the back seat.

The perpetrators allegedly ordered the victim to sleep with his head facing down as they drove off with the victim.

It is believed that they told him not to put up a fight and that they want to use his vehicle to pick up gold.

While they drove on a gravel road, the vehicle came to a standstill.

The victim was allegedly placed in another vehicle, and his eyes were closed with disposable masks.

It is believed that the perpetrators took the victim’s cellphone, wallet, bank cards and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The perpetrators allegedly drove with the victim for a long distance and communicated over the phone about gold before they dropped the victim in Kagiso and instructed him not to look back.

On the same day, another carjacking occurred at approximately 22:30 on Rhodes Street in the Central Business District.

The victim is believed to have travelled in Rhodes Street when he came to a standstill at the robots with his windows down as he was smoking in his vehicle.

Allegedly, he looked up and saw a man taking the key from his ignition and pointing at him with a firearm.

It is believed that the victim was instructed to move to the passenger seat and to keep his head between his knees when three other men entered the vehicle.

The men allegedly drove with the victim until they reached a field and instructed him to get into his vehicle’s boot after handing over his bank card, pin and cellphone.

It is believed that the men left him in the field and withdrew money from his account.

Arrive Alive suggests the following guidelines to prevent hijackings: Other situations: If approached by a stranger while in your vehicle, drive off, if possible or use your hooter to attract attention.

Lock your doors, close your windows and do not have bags or briefcases visible in the vehicle.

Use the boot for this.

Cellphones should also not be visible.

There are times and days when these items are visible in the vehicle. It is recommended to have smash & grab film fitted to your vehicle.

If you have left your stopping distance, you may be able to escape.

Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious-looking characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the SAPS.
