A reading nation is a well-informed nation

‘The benefits of writing get one to organise his or her thoughts, grow in confidence, improve communication skills, and get one to have relaxed mental health.’ Said Ms Mzamo Mayekiso.

Entwasakusa Trading and Projects hosted a book workshop at the Millennium Roman Catholic Church Hall in Ackerville recently.

The workshop aimed to popularise the concept of reading clubs in the community so that they can build a reading nation.

Entwasakusa is an entity that was set up to provide professional services and manage projects in the public sector with a particular focus on education, training, languages and community development fields.

According to Dr Nomsa Mgijima of Entwasakusa, the target was general community members, people who are running book clubs or who are members of book clubs and people who read in libraries but may want to start book clubs.

Ms Mzamo Mayekiso from a publisher’s perspective said that her publishing company has already published 15 books in different languages.

Professor Bishop Makobe.

She also explained creative writing and the different types of writing.

She said writing takes many forms, like writing a song, writing for a film, a television script, and non-fiction and fiction novels.

She added to say anyone can be a creative writer, one has to use his or her imagination and organise his or her thoughts well.

“The benefits of writing get one to organise his or her thoughts, grow in confidence, improve communication skills, and get one to have relaxed mental health. Start by reading anything you came across, be it newspapers or books. It takes time to be a good writer, but one can improve as time goes by reading and getting information from different sources,” said Mayekiso.

Professor Bishop Makobe from an author’s perspective said that one has to have a target market and encouraged people to start book clubs, share knowledge and discuss ideas.

“It was an inclusive workshop because some invitees were school-based personnel who support learners with reading. Some schools already have book clubs. The reading campaign is a national initiative following a call made by the president in 2019 to create a reading nation, explained Dr Mgijima.
