Drains are causing a ‘storm’ in Extensions 8 and 16

‘The water has nowhere to go but to flood their yards or run like a river down the street,’ Democratic Alliance Ward 33 Councillor Kim Faduk said.

‘Storm drains’ cannot have a more accurate name in Extensions 8 and 16, as they look like they were hit by a storm: Broken, full of grass, and overflowing.

When the rain comes around and leaves water streaming down the roads, one can only be grateful for the storm drains in the streets.

Sadly, their existence is of no assistance when they need repair or become blocked with grass and trash.

The drains in Extensions 8 and 16 serve as examples in this regard.

More specifically, the issue ‘flows’ at its highest in the streets of Ackerman, Breytenbach, Langenhoven, Mostert and Rothman.

The drains in these streets are overgrown by grass and plants and filled with trash.

At some of the drains, pieces of concrete are scattered, or some miss their covers, posing a danger to walking children.

Democratic Alliance Ward 33 Councillor Kim Faduk said the storm drains are reported regularly and, with the amount of rainfall, they don’t serve their purpose.

“Many residents complain that the storm drains need repairs. I forward the complaints each time. The water has nowhere to go but to flood their yards or run like a river down the street,” Faduk said.

Unfortunately, the reports seem to be going with the flow, away from being addressed.

The spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Lebo Mofokeng was contacted for comment regarding the above issue, but no response was received before print.
