Junior runs at national cross-country

The young man competed for the SA title in his respective field in East London on September 29 at the Walter Sisulu College.

Junior Sipho Shongwe (14), a learner from Duvha Park Primary School has been chosen as one out of six students in his age group to represent Mpumalanga in cross-country.

The event was held in East London on September 29 at the Walter Sisulu College.

He competed for the SA title in his respective field.

He also took part in athletics.

“I want to thank God and I am very excited,” said Junior.

His coach, Jane Leshaba said that she hopes he wins because it could be great for the school and the province as a whole, but most importantly it could help Junior get sponsors and be more recognisable as a pro-athlete.

“I am so proud of Junior,” Leshaba added.

“The community must continue to support our learners, especially the athletes. We must continuously work on the talent and development of these youths,” she concluded.

The principal, Miss Maria Nekhudzhiga commented on Junior’s achievements, saying: “I am so happy for the young man because if he managed to go through the district and represent Mpumalanga, you can see that there is a future for him. And I am happy for my teachers who coach and develop the learners in participation in all sports because, without that, the learners like Junior might have not had the opportunity to develop these talents and achieve their full potential. Usually, we want everyone to be academics, but some people are not supposed to be academics but can make money through their skills,” Nekhudzhiga concluded.
