Langenhoven Street is down in the dumps

Despite numerous clean-up efforts, illegal dumpers still have their minds in the gutter on Langenhoven Street Extension 8.

Illegal dumping in Langenhoven Street Extension 8 is not a new issue.

Despite numerous clean-ups, illegal dumpers still seem to have their minds in the gutter with a ‘garbage in, garbage out’ motto.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 33 Councillor Kim Faduk has been tackling this heap of an issue since the beginning of 2021, when she was only a DA candidate before the by-election on May 19 that year.

On April 20, 2021, she reported a fire at the mini-substation in Langenhoven Street with the assistance of DA Ward 34 Councillor Lizelle Steyn.

Faduk said that she extinguished the fire herself with the use of sand.

The following day, the Emalahleni Local Municipality came to clean up the area around the mini-substation.

Unfortunately, the clean-up took place in vain as the dumping continued.

The mini-substation in Langenhoven Street Extension 8 surrounded by garbage on August 23.

In the months that followed, Faduk submitted requests to the council for assistance in cleaning the area.

“At the beginning of 2022, I was trying to make barriers so cars cannot drive through from the back of Eskom to Langenhoven Street. I was at my wit’s end and asked for help from the community. A kind resident, Adele van der Merwe, allowed her tractor-loader-backhoe to be used and assist with the barriers on April 8, 2022,” Faduk said.

The barriers were raised but soon removed by illegal dumpers.

A few weeks afterwards, she was assisted by Van der Merwe again in raising more barriers.

However, the efforts meant no more than trash to illegal dumpers who continued to dump garbage and remove barriers.

“In May 2022, I had a meeting with the deputy director regarding the state of the place around the mini-substation again. Two days after that, they came to clean the area,” Faduk said in closing.

Despite the clean-up efforts, illegal dumpers seem to persist with their dirty tricks with trash scattered on Langenhoven Street on August 23.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this begs one to question what a picture of a thousand pieces of scattered trash has to say about the behaviour of illegal dumpers.
