Joubertsrus Cemetery is as forgotten as those buried there

Joubertsrus Cemetery is in very bad shape.

A cemetery is a place where families should be able to go and remember and mourn about loved ones who have passed on.

Plastic seen left at the gate for weeks on end.

But in Joubertsrus Cemetery’s case, it is hard to think that anyone can find peace and remembrance of loved ones buried there.

WITBANK NEWS reported in March about the non-existent upkeep.

Overgrown weeds and grass seen.

On April 4, the local municipality had operation Hlanzeka where they and community members cleaned one of the 14 cemeteries.

Sewerage water giving off a pungent smell.

The municipality promised that the cemeteries will be maintained monthly subject to the availability of resources, especially human resources.

Branches left on the graves.

Currently the gates have been removed and the grass has been burned, but the condition of the cemetery is nothing than what it is supposed to be.

One grave damaged and vandalised due to the gates being stolen.

We have reached out to Municipal  Spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng.

No upkeep clearly visible.

“The Department for Environment and Parks has a program under the Mayoral Project Operation Hlanzeka, part of the program includes parks and cemeteries. With our limited resources and personnel we will not at this stage commit on the exact date and time, but we note the concern and will action it,” he said.
