Family wants answers from hospital after baby’s death

The mother noticed that her child had developed some problems with its right leg, it was swollen and could not move and later developed gangrene.

Every mother looks forward to delivering a bouncing baby after a nine-month pregnancy; it was the same case with Ms Martha Mkwane.

Ms Mkwane was transferred from KwaMhlanga Hospital to Witbank Hospital, and she gave birth to a child on December 4 premature.

The mother noticed that her child had developed some problems with its right leg, it was swollen and could not move and later developed gangrene.

According to the family when the doctors were told about this, one of them allegedly said it was a minor problem as the leg would be amputated. Unfortunately, the baby died on February 17, and it was stated that it was natural causes.

The family indicated that they wanted the post-mortem results, but were told that they need to open an inquest with the police.

They did that and went ahead to claim the body, but the hospital refused the body.

It was only after they opened a case with the police that the family had the body so that they could do a post-mortem privately.

The family said they were badly treated by the hospital, and they want to find the real cause of the death of their baby and also wanted to have closure.

A questionnaire was sent to the Department of Health for a response, but no response was received.
