Three fires reported since Monday in City of Coal

A neighbour’s quick thinking saved an elderly wheelchair-bound woman from her burning home.

eMalahleni residents are reeling after two devastating housefires and one fire that gulped up grass right next to a house.

On Tuesday, September 24, at approximately 19:00, a fire broke out at 21 De Kock Avenue.

Residents had attempted to dispose of old thatch from a lapa by setting it alight, but the flames quickly spread to the side of the house, threatening the roof.

Thanks to the swift action of a neighbour, who noticed the flames and alerted others, the fire brigade was contacted through community groups and arrived promptly to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Just hours later, on Springbok Street in another house, a fire erupted, trapping an elderly wheelchair-bound woman inside.

On Monday, September 23, at approximately 18:00, the Mlangeni family’s home in Klarinet’s Extension 3 was gutted by fire

A quick-thinking neighbour sprang into action, mobilising the community for assistance and helping to rescue the woman through a window.

Despite suffering minor injuries, the woman was fortunate to have escaped the blaze, which was contained by the fire brigade before it could spread throughout the house.

In a separate incident on Monday, September 23, at approximately 18:00, the Mlangeni family’s home in Klarinet’s Extension 3 was gutted by fire. According to Thato Mlangeni, the family’s eldest son, the blaze started in the garage and was rented out to tenants after electricity returned following weekend power outages. The fire spread rapidly, ravaging the entire house and leaving the family without belongings.

Ward 15 Cllr Nombuso Mokwana has asked for community assistance to help rebuild the home for the Mlangeni family.

Anyone willing to help can contact the ward counsellor on 076 188 7683.
