Woman gets more than she bargained for at salon in eMalahleni CBD

A trip to get her nails done turned into a nightmare.

A local woman’s evening visit to a salon in Mandela Street in the CBD turned into a nightmare when she was allegedly pushed inside the salon by three suspects and held hostage.

The grey VW Tiguan that was recovered.

According to Jabhile Nkosi, a resident visited a salon on Friday, September 6 around 18:45. After parking her grey VW Tiguan, she crossed the road and knocked on the salon door. As someone from the salon opened for her, three suspects allegedly pushed her inside and demanded cellphones from everyone.

“I hid my phone and refused to hand it over, telling them they’d have to kill me if they took it because I only came to do my nails and I don’t have the phone with me,” said Nkosi.

The suspects allegedly took Nkosi’s car keys, and everyone’s phones who were in the salon, locking them inside the salon, and fled the scene with valuables, including clothes, and her child’s cellphone from her vehicle.

Nkosi quickly contacted her partner, who phoned friends to search for the car. It was found in a local township, allegedly damaged from a crash.

“I’m relieved they did not harm me, but my car and belongings were damaged,” said Nkosi.

“This experience taught me to book salon appointments in advance for safety,” Nkosi advised.

Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police Station gave these tips:“Avoid being alone in a vehicle when traveling at night. Do not stop around hiking spots or in any secluded area. Always be alert when driving. If you suspect that you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the SAPS Emergency Number 10111. Avoid such as being on your phone, drinking, and driving. Increase caution at intersections; always look out for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.”

This is still an ongoing case as police are investigating.
