Face of Emalahleni celebrates 10 years of empowerment

“The journey wasn’t easy, but community support and local sponsors made it possible.”

The Face of Emalahleni beauty pageant marks its 10th anniversary this year, a decade of transforming lives through youth empowerment and community upliftment.

Founder Sibongile Mabona’s passion for modelling sparked the initiative. “I wanted to bring opportunities closer home, and the pageant was born,” she said.

Established in 2015, the pageant has grown from a small event into a significant platform for young people in eMalahleni. Initially starting with one category, Miss Face of Emalahleni, it now includes Miss Teen, Mr Emalahleni, Little Miss, Preteen, and Ms Emalahleni.

“The journey wasn’t easy, but community support and local sponsors made it possible,” Sibongile said.

Key supporters include Lindiwe Phakathi, who helped compile the first proposal, and Lindiwe Mtsweni.

Beyond the stage, the pageant focuses on charitable activities, youth development, and empowerment.

“We’ve donated sanitary towels, food, and clothes to those in need. Our winners receive bursaries to further their studies,” Sibongile explained.

Ayanda Masuku, a former contestant, founded the Pink Touch Foundation, inspiring young girls. Other contestants have established modelling agencies and beauty pageants.

Sibongile envisions greater growth, “In 10 years, I see the pageant rivalling Miss South Africa. I want more graduates emerging from this platform.”

However, balancing her roles as an employee, student, and mother poses challenges.

“Building a dedicated team is crucial for continued success,” she admitted.

The 10th-anniversary celebration takes place on October 19 at The Ridge Casino.

“Join us in this milestone celebration. Together, let’s empower more young lives,” Sibongile said.
