Thieves strike fear into hearts of local business owner

Criminals are on the move to jeopardise the security of the eMalahleni business entities.

A sense of security was shattered when three armed suspects carried out a daring daylight robbery at a local business in eMalahleni.

According to the police reports, the complainant said that on Thursday, September 5, at approximately 09:05 three suspects, posing as customers, entered the premises and inquired about product prices before briefly leaving.

However, they allegedly returned with a firearm, pointing it at the complainant and demanding access to the money box.

The robbers allegedly stole cellphones worth thousands of rands.

The police’s quick response has been applauded, and an investigation is ongoing to bring the suspects to justice.

According to Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson of the Witbank SAPS, “Witbank Police have noticed an increase in the business robberies, specifically at smaller businesses in town.

The Witbank Police would like to request small businesses to implement the following preventative measures against business robberies:

Controlled entrances are important in preventing over-crowding in your premises; make sure you have measures in place to restrict movement at entrances and exits to your business, for both staff and customers.

Be alert during opening and closing times.

Always work in pairs to prevent being surprised or being overpowered by criminals.

Train your staff to ask for identification before allowing anyone entry to your business premises.

Make sure all outside entrances and inside security doors have deadbolt locks.

If you use padlocks, they should be made of steel and kept locked at all times.

Remember to remove serial numbers from your locks, to prevent unauthorised keys from being duplicated.

Windows should have secured locks and burglar-resistant glass.

Consider installing metal grates on all your windows except display windows.’

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation in combating crime. Business owners and staff are urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the police.
