Gutted commune in Ext 10 was previously reported to municipal zoning department

“I want to express sympathy and concern following the recent house fire that has devastated a home in our community,” Scheepers said.

Fire guts commune in Extension 10 on Monday, September 2.

Emalahleni Fire Department responded swiftly to a house fire that was reported in Dirkie Uys Street in Extension 10.

The house, reportedly operating as a commune, caught fire on Monday, September 2 at around 18:30.

Clr Maureen Scheepers who was present at the scene told WITBANK NEWS that the fire was reported on one of the service delivery groups.

Scheepers highlighted that the property has been a point of concern for some time, with previous reports highlighting building irregularities and its use as a commune.

“I reported the community concerns regarding the property to the relevant department, and while I was informed that a notice was issued, I did not receive any subsequent feedback or updates regarding the property’s status,” Scheepers outlined.

The councillor wished to thank the surrounding community, Extension 10 CPF, the South African Community Crime Watch, and the fire department volunteers for assisting on the scene as well as the Fire Department for their swift response, amidst an emergency.

“It’s still always great to witness a community stand together and help each other. I want to express sympathy and concern following the recent house fire that has devastated a home in our community. I am relieved that, fortunately, there were no serious injuries. However, the loss of property and the trauma experienced by the tenants are significant, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident,” Scheepers ended.

WITBANK NEWS reached out to the owner of the house, who was unavailable to comment.
