Policeman to appear in court for alleged murder of wife

The victim was shot several times while driving, and the vehicle then crashed into a fence and got stuck in a trench.

A 39-year-old police sergeant is set to appear in court again, facing charges related to the fatal shooting of his wife, Elsie Mothali, 37.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, September 1, on the Bethal road has sparked widespread concern and condemnation from authorities, including the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi.

According to police, Mothali was shot several times while driving and the vehicle then crashed into a fence, and got stuck in a trench.

Mpumalanga SAPS Spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said, “The police sergeant handed himself to the Witbank Police Station and also handed a firearm believed to have been used in the commission of crime. The weapon is suspected to be a state-issued firearm, and ballistic testing will done as part of the probe.”

The suspect was arrested, and the case docket was handed to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further handling.

“The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage,” Mdhluli added.

Mkhwanazi said, “When members are issued with firearms, they should always bear in mind that such firearms are solemnly used to fight crime and defend themselves when their lives, or those around them, are in danger. Such reports like this one draw us back in our fight against gender-based violence and femicide. Members should seek professional help whenever they come across challenges in their families. The SAPS has implemented an Employee Health and Wellness component to assist members with their challenges, and their services are free of charge.”

The case will continue to unfold in court on Wednesday, September 11.
