Death turn claims another life

One driver died on impact and two others were left in critical condition after a horrific accident on OR Tambo Road's Swartbos death turn.

The eerie remnants of danger tape and shattered car debris, left behind, serve as a grim reminder of the devastating accident that unfolded on OR Tambo Road’s infamous Swartbos death turn.

All that remains of one of the vehicles involved in the accident.

On Saturday, August 17, at approximately 23:00, a catastrophic head-on collision between a VW Taigo and a VW Polo claimed the life of one driver and left two others fighting for survival.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where a man had succumbed to his injuries on impact.

Two others, a male and a female, were critically injured and transported to the hospital.

The road was closed between Mona Street and Gordon Road, but that didn’t deter curious drivers from rubbernecking, posing a risk to emergency personnel and potentially causing further harm.

The cause of the accident remains unknown, but one thing is certain – this treacherous corner has claimed countless lives in eMalahleni.

The tragedy occurred mere meters from a 70km/h speed limit sign, a haunting reminder that this stretch of road demands caution and respect.

As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident, the community is left to mourn the loss of life and pray for the recovery of those injured.

“We urge the public to please use extreme caution when using this stretch of road. Over the years it has claimed countless lives and there are frequent accidents on this corner. We also urge the public to please use precaution when approaching the scene of an accident, and if at all possible use alternative routes when an accident has occurred, so as not to potentially cause another accident or harm to emergency personnel,” commented Captain Eddie Hall from the Witbank SAPS.
