Boots in Australia, heart in SA

16-year-old Matthew Marsberg hold South African flag high in Brisbane.

Matthew Marsberg, a 16-year-old with a strong South African pedigree, scored a dream ‘try’ when he was selected to carry the Springboks’ flag onto the pitch for their clash against the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The young man, whose family made the move to Australia in 2017, went to Klipfontein Primary before making the long trek to Oz.

He was so chuffed to be the sole bearer of the SA flag, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the captain of the Springboks, Siya Kolisi during the pre-match festivities on Saturday, August 10.

Matthew’s commitment to his roots is as solid as a scrum, playing for the U16 South African team in Brisbane and turning out for his local club in the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union.

“We are so incredibly proud of our grandson,” beamed his grandmother, Kim Marsberg, like a conversion kick sailing through the uprights.
