Local pigeon wins Mpumalanga race

This week the programme moves to the Northern Cape an approximate distance of 550km.

With the cold weather easing up slightly, club results showed a marked improvement.

The sprint race from Potchefstroom on Friday was again a fast affair with club chairman Jurie Hanekom clocking the first two birds before the next four entries from André van Rensburg.

Again, the first 10 pigeons clocked within a minute, thus completing a race distance of approximately 230km at an average velocity of 87km/h.

On the morning of July 20, the young birds were up at 07:30 at Christiana, being pushed along by a moderate west-south west breeze.

At 12:45 Jabulane Mkhatshwa clocked his winner, a blue bar hen, six seconds before the second pigeon belonging to Hansie van der Merwe.

Third place went to a check white flight hen belonging to Brian Ludick, followed in quick succession by two pigeons belonging to Jurie.

Winning velocity was a whopping 89km/h over a distance of 470km! The first 25 entries clocked within 10 minutes.

In the open race liberated an hour later, the breeze was now stronger, resulting in the pigeons reaching their respective lofts five hours later, clocking a velocity of over 92km/h, and thus setting the second-fastest velocity for the season so far!

André’s winning pigeon, a blue bar pied cock, also won the Mpumalanga race, second was Jurie with Hansie’s blue bar hen splitting Brian’s third and fifth place birds.
