Fatal shooting at Tsepo’s

Bouncer shot dead in early hours of the morning at Tsepo's Braai Corner

Residents have been trying for years to close down the seemingly problematic Tsepo’s Braai Corner, situated in Die Heuwel, but to no avail. Unfortunately, it appears as if the problems that have plagued the popular tavern are still ongoing.

On Monday, July 8, at around 02:30, SAPS received a call that there had been a shooting at the infamous entertainment and drinking venue. Upon arrival, the police found that the establishment was closed, but all the staff members were still inside.

They spoke to the manager who was on duty who alleged that while he was on duty, he heard a gunshot coming from the VIP section.

He further alleged that when he went to go and look at what had happened, he found one of the bouncers with a gunshot wound in the leg. The bouncer was rushed to hospital by a private vehicle.

According to a police report SAPS found blood all over the VIP section and a single bullet cartridge on the floor.

The Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) was called to the scene to conduct their investigation.

While SAPS and the LCRC were busy at the scene, a call was received that the bouncer had tragically succumbed to his wounds.

A case of murder has been opened, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Shootings and raucous behaviour by patrons appear to be the norm when it comes to Tsepos, as there were allegations made as far back as 2016 of gunshots and irresponsible conduct by patrons among other things, which spurred residents to start a petition to have the establishment shut down, but the complaints seem to have fallen on deaf ears and that the problems will continue.

“I am deeply concerned about the ongoing issues at the local tavern in the residential area. I am contacted on a weekly basis by the surrounding community with different complaints originating from this establishment. This is not the first, second or even third murder that takes place at this establishment. Not only is the tavern attracting criminal elements, but it is also consistently violating municipal by-laws regarding noise and operating hours. The establishment’s failure to adhere to its liquor license, which mandates closing at 02:00, and its continued operation until 04:00 is unacceptable. This blatant disregard for safety, regulations and the well-being of the surrounding community is unacceptable,” said Clr Maureen Scheepers from Ward 20.

She added am committed to continue working with different authorities and departments to ensure the neighborhood becomes a safe and pleasant place for all residents again.

The management of the establishment was contacted for comment, but no response had been received at the time of going to print.
