Spiking incidents a growing concern

Phola Police has begun an awareness campaign regarding the ongoing spiking cases in eMalahleni

Phola Police recently conducted an awareness campaign over the ingoing spiking incidents, carjacking’s, armed robberies, and hitchhiking experienced by motorists driving on the N12 and N4.

The event was held at Kusile Power Station on Wednesday, June 26 as most of these incidents occur on the roads leading to the power station.

Phola police communications liaison officer Sergeant Thabang Ntuli said the awareness was conducted based on a request made by Ms Nonhlanhla Sikonde who is the Safety Officer at Kusile Power Station, “She requested the station commander Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Viviers to delegate a police officer on behalf of the station for the Tool box talk,” Ntuli shared.

He explained that the Toolbox talk is an employee monthly engagement sessi

on at Kusile aimed at conscientious employees regarding the incidents because they use the N12 and N4 after hours which makes them vulnerable on the road, especially during those times.

Gabisile Ndakisa, Jabulani Shezi, and Sergeant Nonhlanhla Ntuli.

“As a result, Sergeant Nonhlanhla Ntuli from the Crime Information Management and Analysis highlighted the Phola crime statistics regarding trio crimes as well as crime threats and patterns,” Ntuli explained.

Ntuli elaborated on the issue of spikes and gave awareness and tips on how motorists should try to react should they be faced with similar situations, “they should at all times contact the nearest police station, family member or friend if they are spiked or if maybe they sense any form of danger or life-threatening situations,” Ntuli informed.

Jabulani Shezi who is a social worker from the Foundation for Victims of Crime and Gabisile Ndakisa the Community Policing Forum Secretary accompanied the two police officers.

Jabulani gave a small introduction of himself and his organisation, the services they provide, and how they can be reached.
