Thieves help themselves to cellphones and cash in Klipfontein clothing shop

Business robberies are not decreasing in the city.

A clothing shop in a shopping centre in Klipfontein was recently robbed, adding to the spate of continuous business crimes in the city.

The incident resulted in the theft of cash and cellphones on Monday, June 24.

According to reports, a teller on duty reported being approached by an unknown suspect who, albeit not brandishing a pistol, made it clear they meant business. The suspect allegedly told her to accompany him to the back room where the bank’s smartphones are stored, claiming they were ‘here to work’.

When they got to the storeroom, she found her manager and several colleagues allegedly being carried into the storeroom by three additional suspects. She opened the safe, allegedly allowing the robbers to take an undetermined amount of cash and several cellphones. The suspects then left the scene.

Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police gave out these tips and precautions for business owners: “Be alert during opening and closing times. Always work in pairs to prevent being surprised or being overpowered by criminals. Train your staff to ask for identification before allowing anyone entry to your business premises. Make sure all outside entrances and inside security doors have deadbolt locks. If you use padlocks, they should be made of steel and kept locked at all times. Remember to remove serial numbers from your locks, to prevent unauthorised keys from being duplicated. Keep your cash register in plain view from the outside of your business, so it can be monitored by police during the day or at night. Leave it open and empty after closing.”
