New mayor for the City of Coal on the cards after Clr Mabuza resigns

Leah Mabuza was sworn in as MPL and left Emalahleni without a mayor.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality is on autopilot after Executive Mayor Clr Leah Mabuza was sworn in as Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), leaving the municipality with no mayor.

This follows her official resignation on Monday, July 1, after she was sworn in as the new MPL on Tuesday, July 2, in Mbombela, succeeding the prior mayor’s brief and tumultuous tenure last year.

The ANC provincial secretary, Muzi Chirwa, said that Emalahleni was one of the five municipalities affected by the swearing in of the new members of the legislature.

Chirwa added that the regions had already recommended their three candidates who would be considered for the positions of mayors.

“These candidates will undergo interview processes by the ANC’s national executive committee’s task team, which will be constituted by the secretary general of the ANC,” said Chirwa.

“Once that has been done, municipalities will convene to appoint the mayors of those municipalities.”
