Hlalanikahle NGO leads the charge in school recycling

A life-changing recycling NGO works tirelessly to instill a culture of sustainability in eMalahleni

Since its inception in 2023, the Hlalanikahle NGO has been dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability in local schools.

Despite being founded last year, the organisation began operations on May 5 and has already achieved substantial progress in decreasing garbage and boosting recycling in educational institutions.

Their innovative programme, launched earlier this year, aims to educate pupils about the importance of keeping a clean environment and the benefits of recycling.

By partnering with the schools, Hlalanikahle is working tirelessly to instill a culture of sustainability in young minds.

To achieve this goal, the organisation is seeking assistance from companies to donate essential equipment, “For our day-to-day processes, we request assistance from private and public stakeholders to assist with the merchandise we use for collection such as wheel bins, trolleys, and large recycling bins, transportation for collection, compactors, balers, and other recycling machinery,” said George Ntuli.

The recyclables’ organisation is currently governed by six individuals: Celester Nkosi (chairperson), Hendrick Mabena (deputy chairperson), George Ntuli (secretary), Boitumelo Khumalo (deputy secretary), Noxolo Khumalo (treasurer) and Believe Ndlovu (organiser).

The organisation’s main goal is to eradicate poverty by transforming rubbish into treasure, as well as to reduce unemployment among youth and the middle-aged class and to enable women to provide for their children.

“The recycling organisation was able to convince approximately six schools to give white paper and old broken furniture,” said George.

With their dedication and commitment to environmental sustainability, Hlalanikahle sets an excellent example for others. As they continue to positively impact local schools, their efforts will undoubtedly contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

Hlalanikahle NGO has 10 volunteers so far and is eagerly welcoming anyone who would contribute by joining their team in creating an impact in the area that will bring bigger improvements for everyone.
