Are delivery drivers the new targets?

Delivery driver robbed on N4

A delivery driver was happily going about his day doing his deliveries when he was allegedly forced off of the road on the N4 at gunpoint.

On Tuesday, June 4, at around 11:45, the delivery driver told police he was travelling on the N4 with parcels destined for a cellphone retailer worth thousands of rands when a silver Toyota Etios pulled up next to him on the highway.

When he looked over to see what the problem was as they were trying to get his attention, he realised one of the passengers in the vehicle was allegedly pointing a gun at him and signalling for him to pull off of the road.

In fear for his life, he obeyed their demands. The three men that were inside the Etios allegedly overpowered him and held him captive.

The man told police they unlocked the delivery bakkie and started loading the parcels into their car.

Once they were done, they locked him in the back of his delivery bakkie and fled the scene. The driver was left unharmed. The suspects were unknown to the victim.

The delivery driver was contacted for comment but declined to be interviewed.

“These types of crimes are on the increase in eMalahleni, and we ask that delivery drivers be extra vigilant when doing deliveries as they are easy targets, especially when stopping at their delivery points,” commented Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson for the Witbank SAPS.

Hall urges anyone from the public who can assist the Witbank Police in arresting these suspects involved in this armed robbery to please contact Witbank Detective Services standby number 079 891 4809 or Crime Stop on 086 0010 111 or the MySAPSAPP.
