World blood donor day 2024

World Blood Donor Day – Be a hero, save a life

With the June school holidays looming upon us, the SANBS is most definitely going to need more blood donations, and your blood could help save up to three people’s lives – give blood and make a difference.

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day, just in time for the increased need.

During the school holidays, the need for blood stocks goes up exponentially due to the increase in vehicle accidents that sadly occur during this time.

Less than 1% of the South African population currently donates blood, and this is simply just not enough.

As it stands, SANBS has enough blood in stock of O+ blood to last only three days and enough B+ blood to last only five days.

What happens if these stocks run out and it is perhaps your loved one needing the life-saving red liquid to save them?

It takes only 30 minutes to save up to three people. The majority of readers of WITBANK NEWS have at least 30 minutes of spare time in a month to make a huge difference.

You can be someone’s hero in less time than it takes the average person to get dressed in the morning.

To be a hero, you need to be eligible to donate your ‘liquid gold’. You need to be between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh more than 75kg and be in good health.

As a bonus, you usually get your iron levels checked for free, and if you fall short, the champions that work for SANBS will usually give you free iron tablets.

At the moment, if you donate blood, not only will you get your delicious snacks to help replenish, restore and assist your body in making new blood, you will also receive a warm blanket to stave off the winter chill, all completely free as your gift for being a life-saver.

“Each year, thousands of South Africans require blood transfusions during medical procedures, emergencies, and for on-going medical conditions. World Blood Donor Day stands as a beacon of hope and unity, reminding us of the profound impact that individual generosity can have on the health and vitality of our society. We see this day not just as an occasion to celebrate, but as a powerful call to action. It urges us all to step forward, to give something of ourselves, and to become part of a life-saving network of heroes who fuel the pulse of our nation,” said SANBS senior manager of marketing, communication and brand,” Thandi Mosupye.

Be a hero, donate blood, save a life!
