SACCW committed to ending crime in eMalahleni

The Zello app helped catch a suspect just after he allegedly robbed an elderly woman.

The South African Community Crime Watch (SACCW) in eMalahleni is committed to ending crime in the city.

The members who are always on standby and ready to offer a helping hand wherever they can recently helped an elderly lady after she was robbed.

According to Frik van Dyk who is a member of the SACCW, a call came through on Zello that the 69-year-old woman was robbed at knifepoint in Del Judor, and the suspect fled to the bush between the mall and Del Judor Extension 4.

Some of the items that were retrieved from the suspect’s possession.

“As a norm, we stood together and began searching for the suspect. Luckily the lady described him quite well, so we started looking for him. We had responders on the N4, N12 and within the vicinity of the area searching,’’ Van Dyk informed.

He said that one of the responders who was still on his way to cover some of the streets, noticed the suspect walking towards a garden centre in the area.

Responders rounded up across the area and caught the suspect.

“We took him back to the location where he had dropped off the lady’s ID cards and other personal belongings, then brought him back to where we waited with the lady to identify him,” Van Dyk explained.

The members then accompanied the woman to the Klipfontein Police Station where she opened a case against the suspect.

“They said that he is well known for the robberies on the N4 as well,” Van Dyk informed.

He also wished to notify the public, to ensure they download the Zello App in case of an emergency.

“This way you can be assisted immediately as every critical minute counts. A special thanks to all the responders who assisted. It is shown and proven again that if we work together, we can unite as a strong team that won’t stand for crime in our city,” Van Dyk ended.

Witbank Police Station Captain Eddie Hall confirmed that a security company arrested one suspect with robbery items in his possession on Friday, May 31.
