Armed robberies becoming more prevalent

Man was robbed of his possessions and left on a maize farm in eMalahleni.

The number of reported robberies in the city of coal is steadily rising.

Sizwe Jawuza was waiting for transportation on Wednesday, April 17, to get to his assigned location when three men offered him a lift.

“As I waited for a lift to take me to Klipfontein, a white car carrying three men pulled over and offered me a ride,” said Sizwe.

He said one of the suspects then allegedly suddenly held a gun to his neck as he got inside the car and ordered him to remain silent until they took off, accompanying him to a maize farm.
He told police one of the three men grabbed his phone when they arrived at the property and made him take off his clothes. Another suspect then snatched his trousers, which were on the ground, and began going through his pockets.

Along with his phone, he had some cash in one of the pockets, which they also took.

“After they took my phone and cash, they demanded I also hand over my bank card,” he said.

After taking Sizwe’s bank card, the suspects asked whether he had any money in his bank account.
When he replied that he didn’t, they, according to him, asked for his phone number and used it to access his banking app to see if there was money in his account, which there wasn’t.

His phone, bank card and cash were then taken.
The suspects then asked Sizwe if any family members could be contacted to get more money.

He didn’t know of anyone and told the suspects he was the only breadwinner at home, “One of the guys said I should be killed, but a different man showed mercy, saying I shouldn’t be killed, hence I handed my belongings over without violence,” he explained.

Sizwe was then told to run between the cornrows and to never stop and never turn around, “As soon as I realised the suspects had left, I dashed between the cornrows. After turning around to seek assistance, I put my clothes back on and returned home,” Sizwe concluded.

The police are now investigating the matter.
