Chris Fick, a former driver’s licence examiner from Emalahleni Licencing office, who was found guilty of fraud charges, was handed down a sentence in the Witbank Magistrate Court yesterday.
Fick (64) was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of fraud during the period of suspension.
In addition, he was sentenced to a period of three years correctional supervision.
The sentence on April 10 followed after information was received and investigated by the Hawks’ Mpumalanga based Serious Corruption Investigation.
The information indicated that an official was soliciting gratification from applicants who were to be tested for driver’s licences.
The Hawks arrested Fick shortly after he issued a licence to an applicant that was never tested.
The Provincial Head, Major General Gerber issued a stern warning to law enforcement officials to perform their duties with integrity and honesty. He further said that no one is above the law.
“As the Hawks, we shall investigate all priority crimes and bring perpetrators thereof to justice, without fear or favour,” Gerber concluded.
