Family hijacked in Klarinet

“Everything occurred so quickly. One moment I was parking the car, and the next I was staring down the barrel of a gun. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

A family in Klarinet Extension 6 was hijacked shortly after arriving home.

Mr Sunday Mahlangu and his family were thrust into a nightmare scenario when armed suspects targeted them in their garage, making off with their vehicle, an undisclosed amount of cash, and personal belongings.

According to Mahlangu, the incident unfolded shortly after he and his wife arrived home, with his wife asking their daughter to open the garage door.

Mahlangu said, “Everything occurred so quickly. One moment I was parking the car, and the next I was staring down the barrel of a gun. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

He added that while the suspects were reversing, one of them allegedly pointed a gun at him and his daughter and asked them to kneel, and he then apparently searched Mahlangu before leaving.

Despite their quick thinking to alert their vehicle tracker company, the criminals managed to evade capture, leaving the family shaken but thankfully unharmed.

“I’m deeply hurt by what has happened, but I’m thankful that none of us were physically harmed. However, it pains me to know that my daughter had to experience such an ordeal,” said Mahlangu.

With hijackings reportedly becoming all too regular in the neighbourhood, Mahlangu issued a harsh warning to neighbours, encouraging them to be attentive and take the appropriate safeguards.

“These criminals are constantly lurking, waiting to strike. We must all remain vigilant and cautious at all times,” he said.

He is asking for assistance in finding his white Toyota Hilux bakkie with registration number JZC586MP.

Spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall gave these prevention tips for carjacking: Have your key ready, but not visible. Inspect the outside and inside of the vehicle before unlocking it. (Tyres, number plates, and both sides of the vehicle).

Know your destination and directions to it, and be alert should you get lost.

Always drive with your windows closed and your doors locked.

Make a mental note of any police stations in the vicinity.

When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front of your vehicle to make an emergency escape, if necessary.

When dropping off a passenger, make sure they are safely in their own vehicle before departing.

Avoid driving through high-crime or unfamiliar areas.

Avoid driving late at night or in the early hours of the morning when the roads are quiet.

Drive in the center lane, away from pedestrians, where possible.

If possible, never drive alone.

Never pick up hitchhikers or strangers.
