Witbank Police nab five foreign nationals after a tip-off

The five suspects will appear before the Witbank Magistrates Court on Tuesday, March 26.

Five foreign national suspects are expected to appear before the Witbank Magistrates Court after a foiled business robbery.

According to the Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Mpumalanga Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the suspects between the ages of 25 and 39 were arrested in eMalahleni shortly after a business robbery on Friday, March 22.

“It is said that a group of armed men stormed into a shop which caused some patrons to panic as a result of the presence of suspects. Suddenly, one of these armed men allegedly pointed at the complainant with a firearm. It is said that they held the victims hostage and robbed the complainant of an undisclosed amount of cash as well as a mobile phone,” said Lieutenant Manamela.

It is further alleged that when a good civilian noticed the robbery, he bravely pursued the vehicle in question, a blue Toyota Corolla which was seen parked next to the shop.

“A few moments later, he fortunately noticed a police vehicle and immediately informed the men and women in blue about the robbery that had just occurred. In turn, the Police responded swiftly and spotted a Toyota Corolla as well as a Hyundai. It was at this point when the five suspects were cornered and arrested,” said Lieutenant Manamela.

The five suspects are faced with a charge of business robbery as well as contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa and are set to appear before the court on Tuesday, March 26.
