With the aromas of traditional Portuguese cuisine embracing the air, laughter, and reminiscing over the past 50 years guests toasted the special milestone.

“Things were so much different back then. We worked very hard to collect money to build up the club in the former Witbank,” said Ms Fernanda Ramos who has been part of the club since 1974.

Fredi Magani.

Mr Fernando Ramos told WITBANK NEWS that the Portuguese men built the club with their own hands.

“When we started the club was near the railway houses. When we got this piece of land we all jumped in and started building.

If you were a builder you were responsible for building, if you were a welder you did the welding, if you were an electrician the electrical work was yours to do.

Everyone put his own time and effort into the construction of the club,” Fernando said.

The founding members of the club were Baptista Cerdeira, Fernando Verissimo, Isabel Morais, Joao Pereira, Jorge Marques, Manuel Dos Anjos, and Mario Vieira.

Mr Paul Manarte is the current president of the club.
