Vosman Police were hard at work over the festive

There were 78 reports of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) in December last.

Vosman Police are urging the community to promote tolerance and avoid physical altercations when confronted with social problems to stem the rising tide of violence.

This plea comes on the heels of 78 reported incidents of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) in December 2023 alone.

According to reports, these violent occurrences primarily happened during drinking binges, emphasising the role of intolerance in worsening the issue.

The police have been vigorously pursuing suspects in these assaults, leading to the arrest of 48 people, with continued efforts to apprehend further suspects.

In addition to the GBH cases, there have been 38 reported cases of common assault, resulting in 14 arrests.

Vosman Police Station spokesperson Captain Elizabeth Hlathi said, “The modus operandi is the same, and in short, police can conclude that the cause is an abuse of liquor.”

Hlathi further explained, “These arrests came as a result of the astute detectives of Vosman, as they have developed a strategic approach of always conducting weekly operations on different schedules. The strategy has proven itself to be effective, as many suspects have also been arrested for different crime categories, including theft and public drinking. Others were not spared for drinking and driving as well. Police also arrested undocumented persons as well as suspects who were found having drugs.”
