‘Dirty’ water stirs anger in community

Challenges of odorous smell and discolouration have been reported in eMalahleni.

The municipality has been inundated with complaints from residents within specific water supply zones of water quality deterioration in terms of discolouration and odorous smell of the water supplied

Challenges of odorous smell and discolouration have been reported by customers supplied from Point C.

Customers supplied from Point A customers have been complaining about water discolouration.

The municipal scientific team has been doing daily testing and monitoring of the situation since it has been reported.

The main challenge started when the municipality experienced water disruptions were during the Thungela shutdown.

High concentrations of manganese were discovered and this was also reported at the NuWater plant which is currently experiencing a challenge dealing with the high manganese concentrations detected in the raw water supply.

The following interventions have been undertaken:

  • Calcium Hypochlorite is currently being administered to deal with the odouros water and the situation is monitored closely
  • Interventions have been conducted to deal with the manganese at the water treatment plant and the concentrations have been reduced to the acceptable levels, NuWater plant is still experiencing high concentrations of manganese and these are also being treated to comply as a matter of urgency.
