Cars in eMalahleni stolen in broad daylight

Police urge motorists to take extra care and be vigilant this festive season.

It is silly season, and along with the Christmas carols and decorations comes a lot of crime.

Two motorists were left without wheels as their vehicles were stolen.

A man stopping at a power utility on Monday, November 13 felt a jolt of disbelief when he saw an empty parking and not his car waiting there for him.

The man told police that he stepped out at 11:00 to talk to a colleague and his vehicle was still in its place. But, when he returned at 16:00, the vehicle was gone.

The next day, a man’s bakkie was nicked from the pavement in front of a yard. This incident happened in broad daylight between 13:00 and 15:00.

Tracker SA sent out an email earlier this week warning motorists about recent trends they picked up.

“Keyless entry theft is a growing form of vehicle crime whereby a syndicate uses technology to amplify the signal from your vehicle’s key back to an accomplice, who opens your car, starts it, and drives away. Protect yourself from this type of crime by either storing your vehicle key in a Faraday Pouch to block the signal or consider deactivating the keyless functionality via your dealership,” was the message from the tracking company.

Sergeant David Ratau, local police spokesperson added, “When you park your vehicle, make sure the area is well-lit and parked in such a way that you can keep an eye on it. If you feel that you are being followed, drive to your nearest police station.”
