Educating through the arts

Learning through arts and stage productions are the main goal for these young learners.

Arts and education go hand-in-hand, and that is what this year’s Festival of Stars aims to produce for the public.

On Friday, October 27, actors-in-training from three different schools brought awareness to the stage in dramatic form at the Emalahleni Civic Theatre.

These learners had the task of taking controversial themes such as alcohol and drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence and bringing them alive on stage through emotional acting.

The three schools, Ekurhuleni Combined School, Elanga Secondary School, and Pine Ridge Combined School were invited back to a final event after beating seven other schools in a semi-final event held to determine the best performances.

The various productions were judged by a panel through specific criteria.

The events were organised by the local non-profit organisation Krasters.

The organisation aims to educate through the arts.

They also have a clever initiative to teach learners who do not understand a lesson through acting, arts, and bringing the lesson into a clearer light.

That is what project manager Herbert Mokoena believes is essential in schooling.

“This event is not only for awareness, but it is also a great way to have these learners in such a setting. They learn about stage production and acting. They also learn very important lessons and through their productions, they convey a message of importance,” said Herbert.
