Given Hope Foundation has formed a strong partnership with Sanca.

The NPO has partnered with Sanca, and together the collaboration trained young people as professional chefs.

Sanca’s mission is to render substance abuse prevention and treatment services, which are geared towards creating and reinforcing healthy behaviour and lifestyle changes.

They want to make sure that they do outreach programmes, offering out-patient treatment, capacity building, and training as well as corporate services by multidisciplinary teams.

In reaching their goal, it entails taking action at three levels.

The students of the foundation being trained as chefs were addressed by Ms Astonish Mahuba from the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca).
Ms Mahuba said Sanca’s wide range of objectives is designed to tackle the issue of substance abuse from various angles, each of which contributes to the overall goal of promoting a healthy and productive society.

She also pointed out that healthcare workers can be provided with training to detect early substance use disorders and provide strategies to educate about the risks of drug use.

Given Hope Foundation is a non-government organisation under the leadership of Given Mabena. Mabena said the organisation was going to train people to bake and cook, as he is a professional chef.

The foundation has also formed a partnership in collaboration with the Babusise Group training department and will offer hospitality skills development to unemployed individuals to be employable or to start their own business and to have a positive impact on the struggling economy.

“Currently we have a group of 12 learners who are committed and are learning food and beverage service skills. In the future we are aiming at teaching them cookery, professional cookery, baking, event decoration and customer care,” said Busisiwe Ndhlovu of Babusise Group Hospitality Training.

Mabena pointed out that he has faced a lot of challenges in his life, but now there is light at the end of the tunnel and is hopeful that the programme will succeed.

He also said that he has received a lot of support from sponsors and that a lot of people would be trained, and they aim to change their lives for the better.

In the future, the kitchen will be well-equipped with stoves and will also have a lecture room.

The trained group will plant their own vegetables. Mabena also has indicated that he has received a lot of support from different government departments and appreciates the support.

The learners were allowed to ask questions related to drugs.
