Emalahleni’s very own hip-hop star is rising

It is all about beats and artistry for Benson Khronic.

Currently, the city can boast that it is bursting at the seams with young up-and-coming artists.

Ben Maropa, known as Benson Khronic (26), a local hip-hop performer, is no exception.

The Mpumalanga-born artist moved to eMalahleni with his family when he was two years old.

“I consider myself raised in Witbank, particularly in the neighbourhoods of Vosman and Hlalanikahle. I have been involved in performing since the age of 12. At such a young age, I would already perform for my friends during school gatherings,” said the artist.

Recently, the artist represented South Africa on the international stage when he took part in the 10K challenge on October 7 battling it out between 20 semi-finalists and making it to the finals in the hip-hop division.

Benson Khronic was set to compete on an international level, alongside renowned local acts like Areece, Assessa, and Big Zulu, as well as international heavyweights like Mobb Deep.

“When it comes to inspiration, I find immense motivation from my father. He is a music lover and has had prior experience as a DJ and sound engineer. His passion for music has undoubtedly influenced and encouraged my artistic journey,” said Benson when asked what inspires him.

He also said that artists like himself face various challenges and the road to success is paved with thorns, making it a hard road to travel.

“One of the primary struggles is finding opportunities, particularly in eMalahleni. Opportunities are scarce, driving many artists to relocate to other provinces in pursuit of a successful career. Additionally, artists often confront a lack of support from their families, which can result in feelings of discouragement and even lead to quitting,” explained Benson.

The talented artist said that he would like to see himself in a more significantly developed position as an artist in the next five years and aspires to provide opportunities to deserving individuals and contribute to their growth within the music industry.

“I aim to continue organising and participating in hip-hop shows that prove financially beneficial for both myself and other up-and-coming rappers,” concluded Benson.

The artist is excited to share the upcoming events with eager fans and newcomers alike. Some notable performances include The Jump Sessions, The Cook Out, and All Black Party.

These events promise to showcase Benson’s fresh and innovative approach to music, leaving audiences hungry for more.

What sets Benson Khronic apart is his ability to experiment with diverse musical elements, pushing boundaries and expanding the horizons of traditional genres.

His captivating melodies and lyrics incorporate rich harmonies, uplifting rhythms, and thought-provoking lyrics.

This combination resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level, making Benson Khronic an artist whose music truly touches hearts and creates a lasting impact.
