MEC spells out relocation for Old Coronation and Lekazi residents

MEC Speedy Mashilo visits Old Coronation.

Mpumalanga Human Settlements MEC, Speedy Mashilo had invited community members of Old Coronation and Likazi to a community engagement.
The community members gathered at the sports field to hear what the MEC had to say to them.

The event was held on Sunday, October 8.
Mashilo told the community members staying in shacks in these two informal settlements that the relocation programme was underway.

He added that according to the information he has, 5 000 or more community members are staying in those areas.

He mentioned that according to research, the areas were dolomitic and not safe for people to habitat.

Furthermore, he presented an undertaking to relocate them to a safer location in Siyanqoba Phase 2.

“All that needs to be done has taken place, a verification process has been done, several meetings held, and a clear plan to relocate them will be developed. Once developed, the steering committee will present to the department and municipality for endorsement and later implement it,” said Mashilo.

Community members were invited to air their views about the relocation programme, with different sentiments shared.

Some were concerned some living in those areas are foreigners and some community members are not honest when dealing with the relocation programme.
A clear plan will be set, and the people were promised that they will be updated, and time frames will be communicated to them after a committee has been elected.

Time will tell, as Mashilo promised, that they want to see people living in those areas moved to the land of milk and honey.

Even those who can afford to build their own houses will be afforded the chance to be moved to serviced stands.
