Security officer shot at by suspects during robbery in Klarinet

The officer claimed that gunshots were fired in his direction, and he then ran away to the main road where he received help from a police officer.

A business located on the Paxton Road in Klarinet found itself at the centre of a highly coordinated business robbery.

According to the police report, a security officer (28) was on duty when unknown suspects allegedly broke into the guard room and stole various items to an undisclosed amount of money.

As narrated by the security officer, he reported for duty on Wednesday, September 20 at around 18:00 with his colleague.

As they were patrolling, the security officers noticed that the light in the guard room suddenly switched off.

The officer claimed that he informed his colleague that he would go and check what was going on in the guard room. When he approached the guard room, gunshots were fired in his direction, and he then ran away to the main road where he received help from a police officer.

The security officer was able to call his manager and inform him of what had transpired.

A Nissan NP200 bakkie, plant lights, pepper spray, a hand radio, handcuffs, and three phones were stolen.

Witbank Police Station spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall said the South African Police Service has noticed, with concern, the number of business robberies reported and has urged the community, especially business owners, to become more vigilant.

He went on to say the police are urging the public to adhere to and implement the following safety hints to ensure their safety:

Business robberies:

Install extra security gates and appoint security guards.
Install security cameras and alarm systems.
Ensure that all doors and windows are secure.
Keep minimal cash on the premises and bank regularly.
Train staff on how to handle robberies and emergencies.
Keep a record of the serial numbers of valuable items.

Tuck shops and other small businesses must adhere to the operating and closing times and not be open till late.

Refrain from sleeping in tuck shops, as this makes you a bigger target for business robberies.
