Hikers raise awareness about suicide and mental health

Participants enjoyed the walk in nature to remember loved ones lost to suicide, to support those who struggle with mental health issues, and to promote understanding and empathy.

In the fight against the silent epidemic of suicide, hikers have come together to raise awareness, offer support, and ultimately, save lives.
One powerful and symbolic way they do this was through the Walk for a Life Hiking Campaign to create awareness of World Suicide Day on Saturday,

September 9 where several hikers, some of whom have been touched by suicide in one way or another, took a 6km hike through Witbank Dam Nature Resort.
The event was organised by Jabulile Mkhwanazi (Mrs Mpumalanga second runner-up) and Petunia Mtsweni (wellness coach) and also attended by Miss Inspire 2023/24 semi-finalist, Gladys Malemane.

“We have organised this event in remembrance of those we have lost to suicide, raise awareness, and encourage and empower people to take action to prevent suicide. Help is available within your community,” said the two organisers.

The walk served as more than just a physical journey; it was a collective statement of unity, compassion, and resilience to shine a light on a topic often shrouded in stigma and secrecy.
