Hitchhikers are easy targets for armed robbers

Another victim was supposedly robbed of his belongings at a park on Langhoven Street.

Hitchhikers on the N12 or N4 in eMalahleni are constant victims of armed robberies.

It seems criminals have specifically eyed individuals who often use hiking spots.

This comes after a couple was allegedly held at gunpoint by two armed robbers.

According to the female victim (26), she was with her boyfriend on Saturday, September 9 at the Central Business District (CBD) hitchhiking.

The victim alleged that she was standing with her boyfriend at the hiking spot when a grey vehicle stopped to offer them a lift.

The victim supposedly informed the occupants inside the vehicle that she would pay once she arrived at KG Mall in Vosman, as she did not have cash.

It is said that at around 09:40 the driver of the vehicle stopped next to a petrol station and asked the victim to withdraw money at the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) inside.

The victim claims that she did indeed make her way to the ATM, but as she attempted to withdraw the money, she realised that she had the wrong card in her possession.

As she returned to the car with the two occupants and her boyfriend inside the vehicle, the victim allegedly tried to explain to the occupants that she had the wrong card.

However, it is believed that the occupants took the couple’s belongings, although she insisted they drive to Clewer to fetch the right card.

The victim alleged that she was then accompanied to the ATM by one of the two suspects, who threatened her with a firearm and forced her to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money.

In another incident that took place on Wednesday, September 6, a man (31) was also robbed of his belongings at a park.

According to the victim, he had parked his vehicle at a park on Langenhoven Street whilst waiting for a friend.

It is believed that an unknown vehicle with three male suspects entered the park and stopped next to his vehicle.

It is alleged that two out of the three suspects alighted from the vehicle and immediately threatened him with a firearm before helping themselves to his belongings.
