Newborn baby girl found abandoned in an unfinished house, community urged to help locate the mother

Vosman Police are seeking assistance from the community to locate the mother of a newborn baby girl abandoned in an unfinished house.

A shocking discovery unfolded in KwaGuqa Extension 18, as a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in an unfinished house.

The discovery was made on Tuesday, August 29, when a man working on a neighbouring property heard the cries of an infant. His quick actions led to the rescue of the baby, who was found unclothed and placed in a box of apples.

According to Vosman Police Station Spokesperson Captain Elizabeth Hlathi, a concerned woman was summoned to the scene after the cries were detected.

She confirmed the presence of the baby girl, estimated to be only a few hours old. Authorities were immediately notified, and both the police and emergency services arrived to provide aid.

The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, as she was found to be exhausted and hungry but in stable condition.

Vosman Police are now urging the community to come forward with any information that could help identify the mother of the abandoned infant.

Authorities are concerned about the growing number of incidents involving child victims and emphasise the need for a moral and responsible approach to parenting.

This incident follows a recent case in which a seven-month-old baby girl tragically lost her life in a fire at Extension 16, Marikana.

The child’s mother, a 28-year-old woman, has been charged with murder in connection with the incident.

The suspect is currently in custody, with the court proceedings postponed to today (August 30).

Addressing the disturbing trend of child neglect, the Acting Station Commander of Vosman, Colonel Gayane Mashego, expressed his concern.

“This indicates that there is a degree of moral decay within the community,” said Mashego.

Mashego urges the community to refrain from conducting unlawful abortions as well as abandoning their babies. He advised pregnant women to engage the Department of Social Development should they feel that they do not want the babies they are carrying.

Authorities have established a dedicated hotline for anyone with information regarding the abandoned baby girl to contact the Vosman Police Station at 079 891 4822.
