Directors accused of defrauding SARS to appear in court today

Directors are to appear in court for alleged illegal refund claims totalling almost a million rand.

A 39-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were remanded in custody following their appearance before Witbank Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud last week.

They will appear again in court today (Tuesday, August 22).

The pair, both directors of a business is facing allegations of submitting false documents to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in an attempt to claim an undue refund.

The alleged fraudulent activity is said to have transpired on January 20, 2015.

“It is alleged that the two unlawfully and intentionally submitted false documents to SARS, claiming undue refund amounting to R996 236,97,” explained Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.

The accused were remanded in custody following their court appearance on Wednesday, August 16. The legal proceedings are scheduled to continue, with the case set for a formal bail application today.
