Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon hosted by local University

The hackathon is an initiative that will equip students with skills that make them employment-ready university graduates.

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) eMalahleni Campus launched the first Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon (MAISH).

The event was honoured by staff members, and attended by over 300 students from various faculties such as the Faculty of ICT, Engineering and Management Science and esteemed guests from the industry including Nkgwete-IT, and Emalahleni Local Municipality.

MAISH is a provincial competition of student hackers hosted jointly by universities in the Mpumalanga province, namely: The Tshwane University of Technology (Faculty of ICT at Emalahleni campus) and the University of Mpumalanga (Faculty of Science in support of the National Development Plan) Vision 2030 of the government of the Republic of South Africa by addressing Chapter 9 of the plan that focuses on “Improving Education, Training and Innovation,” which is also highlighted as one of the socio-economic outcomes on the Mpumalanga Vision 2030.

TUT eMalahleni Campus academic manager Senyeki Marebane said it is an honour to host the first Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon.

“The hackathon will be organised at TUT eMalahleni campus for three days and two nights starting on Friday, October 27, Saturday, October 28 until Sunday, October 29. We are looking forward to a festival of creation that presents an opportunity for our students to enhance their digital skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, persistence, collaboration, and curiosity through a design science hackathon while delivering AI digital solutions on areas such as national energy crises, tourism, and climate change,” said Marebane.

Duduzile Masuku, lecturer at the University of Mpumalanga, mentioned how exciting it is to be part of this prestigious event that will allow young minds to showcase their creativity and learn from fellow participants while having fun.

The lecturer went on to say that the hackathon is a great initiative that will equip students with skills that make them employment-ready university graduates. “Students will contribute to economic development in the society.”

This year’s hackathon theme is titled: ‘We are creating Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions to solve Africa’s problems’ which speaks to the economic development and growth of the province.
