Klarinet Old Age Group enthusiasts seek indoor gym to maintain healthy lifestyles

The elderly of Klarinet Old Age Group have pledged to lead active and independent lives through frequent exercise, which they hope to, continue provided they are given dedicated space.

In a heart-warming effort to maintain their health and independence, the vibrant members of Klarinet Old Age Group, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), are fervently appealing for a gym space where they can continue their exercise routines.

These spirited grandmothers and grandfathers, whose ages range from 60 to 75, have been actively engaging in physical activities since 2018, utilising the Klarinet Extension football ground as their outdoor fitness space.

The NPO founded in 2013 and boasting a membership of 58 individuals, is dedicated to promoting an active lifestyle among the elderly.

They firmly believe that consistent physical exercise plays a pivotal role in prolonging their lives and maintaining good health.

Jane Mokoena shared her enthusiasm for their fitness regimen: “We have been exercising for five years now. We are currently using the soccer field at Klarinet Extension 3. We do sit-ups, fast walking, and raising hands. I am so happy, I love to exercise, it keeps me alive and is very healthy for me.”

Their commitment to regular exercise has yielded remarkable results, with many members reporting the absence of common health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

However, as winter sets in and the temperatures drop, the beloved outdoor soccer field has become too cold for their early morning workouts.

As a result, the seniors are earnestly hoping for a donation or funding that would enable them to secure an indoor gym space, providing a warm and comfortable environment for their exercise routines.

David Mbethe, another dedicated member of Klarinet Old Age, shared his perspective on the importance of staying active as one age: “I love to exercise. When I was growing up, I used to participate in marathons, but now, due to my body and age, I can only walk a bit, do arm stretch-ups, and eat healthily.”

He emphasised that age is merely a number, and the key is to maintain physical fitness and health, regardless of age.

With unyielding determination, these remarkable seniors are committed to nurturing their well-being through regular exercise. Their belief in the power of physical activity to enhance their quality of life is unwavering.

David eloquently put it, “I don’t mind that I can exercise until I’m 100 years old as long as God gives me the strength to wake up in bed every morning.”
