Protest erupts at Transnet Offices CBD over security changes, fuelling a labour dispute

The recent changes in security guards at Transnet are said to have jeopardised the livelihoods of more than 100 people who are now out of work.

Tensions have boiled over at the Transnet Offices in the CBD as a protest involving around 300 participants unfolded, intensifying concerns about labour rights and security measures.

The incident has shone a spotlight on the underlying frustrations stemming from recent shifts in security personnel at Transnet.

The protest, which took place on Thursday, August 3, was ignited by a new security company’s decision to terminate existing contracts and introduce their staff.

This move has been met with vehement resistance, with protesters arguing that it jeopardises the livelihoods of over 100 workers, now left jobless and grappling with uncertainty.

Johannes Nkambule from the Economic Freedom Fighter’s Labour Desk, said, “The refusal of the new company to acknowledge the contributions of the prior security team has fuelled this unrest.”

He highlighted the protesters’ discontent with the security company’s outright rejection of retaining the established security team.

This stance has propelled the struggle into a broader fight for the rights and well-being of those adversely impacted by the sudden termination of their contracts.

As the situation escalated, reports emerged that security guards allegedly opened fire on the protesting crowd, causing injuries. Nkambule, one of the victims, shared a first-hand account of the incident.

“Even now, I struggle to walk due to the gunshot wound sustained last week. Initially, the pain was intense, and it remains uncertain whether the projectile was a rubber bullet or another type.”

Efforts to settle the situation culminated in an official meeting between officials and demonstrators on Friday, August 4.

The objective was to find explanations and practical solutions, with the possibility of resuming work for individuals affected.

Rubber bullets were used during the protest on Thursday, August 3.

The outcome of these meetings will determine the trajectory of the current matter, impacting the resolution of important concerns held by the impacted parties.

“Following our Friday meeting, we were promised that we would have answers next week, and we keep hoping for the best for the people,” said Nkambule.

A questionnaire was sent to the Transnet communication office, and it was indicated that they would investigate the situation and get back to WITBANK NEWS.
