Waste in the city piled up as no services were rendered for five days

The Municipality’s spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng said as soon as the matter is resolved waste collection will be done and the backlog will also be attended to.

Refuse collection has been brought to a halt in almost all areas of the Emalahleni Local Municipality for four days.

Although the main reason as to why is unclear yet, the local municipality’s spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng on Monday, July 24 said that the municipality takes note of the waste not collected in the past few days, “We are attending to it. As soon as the matter is resolved waste collection will be done and the backlog will also be attended to,” Mofokeng said.

Although the municipality issued a public notice on social media platforms that due to unforeseen logistical issues refuse could not be collected in certain areas, residents continued placing garbage bags outside their homes.

Refuse bags in Amsterdam Street are piling up.

On Thursday, July 20 the municipality issued a refuse removal update and once more confirmed there will be no refuse removal.

“We humbly apologise for the inconvenience and will work towards collecting the backlog,” the statement read.

The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) President Mpendulo Ginindza said the effects of load-shedding have had an immense challenge on the waste management industry.

“Load shedding disrupts the regular schedule of waste collection services in South Africa,” Ginindza said.

Waste has not been collected in eMalahleni for five days.

She concluded that the effectiveness of electric-powered waste collection vehicles and machinery was significantly dependent on a steady supply of electricity.
