MOTHS will be at the Military Fair in August

The fair is taking place on August 12.

Members of the Coalfields District Dugout, belonging to the Memorial Order of Tin Hats, (MOTH) are hard at work to present a stall depicting their proud traditions and activities at the forthcoming Military Fair.

This fair is taking place on Saturday, August 12 at the Portuguese Hall from 08:00 to 16:00.

The MOTH, also referred to as the Order, is the oldest veteran organisation in South Africa.

It was founded in 1927 by Charles Evenden as a brotherhood of South African former front-line soldiers primarily to care for and support the almost ‘forgotten soldiers’ who returned from WWI.

The Order has branches, called Shellholes, throughout the country with some satellite Shellholes in the UK.

Whilst membership was in the past restricted to soldiers who did operational service in WWII, Angola and other operational areas from 1966 to 1989, any ex-serviceman who served in the South African Security Forces in any active operational action or any supporting deployment of such operations, anywhere in or outside the country is welcome to apply for membership to this prestige Order.

Moth Coalfields District has deployed five units which are Crater Shellhole, (founded 1928) Ratel Shellhole, Gondar Shellhole, (Middelburg) Witbank Sound Memory Cottages and Middelburg Sound Memory Cottages.

Units meet monthly and activities include fundraising campaigns to raise funds for the MOTH Cottages, annual parades in memory of the fallen and social gatherings to strengthen the three major values of the MOTH namely true comradeship, mutual help and sound memory.

The members of the Order are looking forward to welcoming families, including children and individuals to their stall at the fair.

Enquiries regarding the MOTH can be directed to Moth Chris Sonnekus at 082 651 3844 or Moth Eras Bezuidenhoudt at 083 468 3186.
